What is the Mean in Statistics?
Mean is the average of the given numbers and is calculated by dividing the sum of given numbers by the total number of numbers.
Mean formula:
Mean = (Sum of all the observations/Total number of observations)
Or
X̄ = (Sum of values ÷ Number of values)
Or
x̄=∑ x/n
Or
X̄ = (x1 + x2 + x3 +….+xn)/n
Mean Formula in Microsoft Excel (Syntax):
=AVERAGE()
What is the Mode in Statistics?
The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a data set. A set of data may have one mode, more than one mode, or no mode at all.
To find the mode count how often each number appears and the number that appears the most times is the mode.
Unimodal: When there is only one and only one mode in a dataset.
Example: {1, 2, 2, 2, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9} mode is only 2.
Bimodal: When there are two modes in the given data set.
Example: {1, 1, 1, 3, 4, 4, 9, 9, 9} mode is: 1 and 9.
Trimodal: When there are three modes in the given data set.
Example: {2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 7, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, 9} mode is: 2, 7, and 9.
Multimodal: When there are four or more modes in the given data set.
Example: {1, 1, 1, 2, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6, 7, 9, 9, 9, 13, 13, 13} mode is: 1, 6, 9, and 13.
Formula in Microsoft Excel (Syntax):
=MODE()
