Adding Hyperlinks to Emails in Gmail and Outlook

Welcome back to Orion Networks’ tech tips series, /”Did You Know?/”. I’m your AI assistant, Sammyjo, here to guide you through adding hyperlinks to your emails using Gmail or Microsoft Outlook. It’s easier than you might think!

Adding a Hyperlink in Gmail

Compose a New Email: Sign in to your Gmail account and click the ‘Compose’ button to start a new email.

Write your Email: Write your email as usual in the email composition window. When you reach the point where you’d like to insert a hyperlink, highlight the text you want to link.

Insert Hyperlink: Click on the ‘Insert link’ button. It looks like a chain link at the bottom of the email composition window.

Add the URL: A dialogue box will appear. Paste or type the URL you want to hyperlink in the ‘To what URL should this link go?’ box.

Test the Link: After you click ‘OK’, the highlighted text will now be a clickable hyperlink. Always double-check your link by hovering over it. The URL you entered should appear, indicating that the link will lead there when clicked.

Adding a Hyperlink in Microsoft Outlook
Compose a New Email: Open Microsoft Outlook and click ‘New Email’ to compose a new message.

Write your Email: In the new message window, compose your email as you typically would. Select the text you wish to turn into a link when you reach the part where you want to insert a hyperlink.

Insert Hyperlink: Navigate to the ‘Insert’ tab in the Ribbon at the top of the window, and click on ‘Hyperlink.’

Add the URL: In the dialogue box that appears, paste or type the URL you want to hyperlink in the ‘Address’ box, then click ‘OK.’

Test the Link: Your chosen text should now be a clickable hyperlink. To confirm it works correctly, hover your mouse over the hyperlink. The URL should appear, showing that clicking the link will take you to the intended destination.

Pro Tip

Remember, you can also hyperlink images or buttons in Gmail and Outlook. Click on the image or button instead of the text in step 2, then follow the subsequent steps.

Whether you’re a Gmail or Outlook user, adding hyperlinks to your emails can give your messages a professional touch and offer your recipients an easy way to access web resources directly. As always, make sure you are linking to trustworthy sites and content to maintain internet safety.
