King Athelstan
An abbey was founded here by King Athelstan after the Battle of Brunenburgh, in which the king secured a victory over the Danes, circa 940. The abbot was granted rights to hold a market, and a community, originally known as Middleton, grew up adjacent to the monastery.

MILTON ABBAS WALKS The long route Start your walk by admiring the pretty village of Milton Abbas which has bundles of charm, character and plenty of unique properties. The walking route leads you out of the village passing Lake Lodge and following the footpath towards the Abbey.

It has 224 pupils as of September 2019, in five houses: Athelstan, Damer, Hambro, Hodgkinson and Tregonwell. The school was founded in 1954 and is co-educational.

Schools are required by the state to teach students only for a set number of hours. Some private schools have longer days or six-day weeks, hence they must have longer holidays.

It is among the oldest boarding schools in Switzerland and one of the most expensive schools in the world, and is known as the “School of Kings”….

Sometimes the curriculum at a private school is harder than at the local public high school. Sometimes the public schools are more rigorous. Teachers and counselors have a smaller caseload than in public schools, so they have more time to give each student.
