Although Sri Lanka is a relatively small island, it experiences two distinct monsoon seasons with some “shoulder” months between the two seasons.

Theravada Buddhism is the official religion of Sri Lanka, with about 70.2% of the country’s population as followers. Sri Lanka has the longest continuous history of Buddhism of any Buddhist nation.

Sri Lanka Grows Richer, India Stays Lower-Middle Income Nation. India continues to be a lower-middle-income country along with 46 others, while Sri Lanka has climbed to the upper-middle-income group for the fiscal year 2020, according to the World Bank’s classification of countries by income levels, released on July 1.

Sri Lanka is cleaner and has a smaller population. Sri Lanka has less wealth and natural resources than India, but the streets, cities and country side are so much cleaner. Sri Lanka’s poverty rate is low, despite the fact that they have limited resources.

In terms of World Bank estimates of per capita GDP Sri Lanka is a poor country indeed: twenty-fifth from the bottom of their list of 125 countries. Income distribution is considerably less unequal than in most developing countries.

Sri Lanka is a beautiful, exotic destination full of culture, nature, wildlife, and smiling faces. For a country with such a violent (and recently so, at that) history, the island is actually home to some of the friendliest people out there.

The main economic sectors of the country are tourism, tea export, apparel, textile, rice production and other agricultural products. In addition to these economic sectors, overseas employment contributes highly in foreign exchange.

Why is Sri Lanka poor? The recent changes in the climate have reduced crop yields and crop growth in Sri Lanka due to heat intolerance and water evaporation. This reduces the economic returns to those in the agricultural sector, leading to lower incomes for the individuals affected by these environmental changes.

By the end of 2019, only 10 percent of Sri Lanka’s total foreign debt is owed to China while 47 percent of foreign debts are sovereign bonds. Such a shift will also significantly change the composition of Sri Lanka’s Chinese debt.

Imports: The top imports of Sri Lanka are Refined Petroleum ($1.87B), Light Rubberized Knitted Fabric ($815M), Gold ($617M), Cars ($555M), and Broadcasting Equipment ($362M), importing mostly from India ($4.23B), China ($4.08B), Singapore ($1.18B), United Arab Emirates ($1.06B), and Malaysia ($851M).

Sri Lanka is the world’s fourth-largest producer of tea. In 1995, it was the world’s leading exporter of tea (rather than producer), with 23% of the total world export, but it has since been surpassed by Kenya. The tea biomass production itself is higher in low-elevation areas. Such tea is popular in the Middle East.
