This small village dates back at least 9,500 years and might have held a population of as many as 8,000 people.

Protection Against Extreme Weather – Since custom underground homes are protected by the earth naturally, extreme weather patterns don’t affect them much. This means insuring them is usually cheaper and they are safer to live in overall.

To get your own Hobbit house, it costs $41 per square foot. So for 1,000 square feet, it’ll cost you $41,000. You’ll be living like a Baggins in no time.

Shelter :: The Hobbit House. This is a house I built for our family in Wales. It was built by myself and my father in law with help from passers by and visiting friends. The house was built with maximum regard for the environment and by reciprocation gave us a unique opportunity to live close to nature.

Some of the doors are large so that during filming humans looked hobbit-sized, while others are small to make Gandalf the Wizard look tall. You can’t go inside the houses—the interior scenes were filmed at Weta Workshop in Wellington—but you can peer inside some of the windows (look out for the cheese-maker).
