120 credits

A standard full-time study load is usually 30 credit hours per year. Typically, in order to graduate with a degree, universities expect students to complete: 120-130 credit hours for a Bachelor’s degree.

Can I graduate with 119 credits? No, you cannot graduate with fewer than 120 credits. This is an absolute minimum.

In fact, 6 years is statistically the average time it takes to graduate from a standard college. If you are an engineering student (I saw you put engineering degree program), graduate in 4 years is really awesome. Here in my university, engineering students finish their study in 5 to 7 years. So don’t worry about it.

However, most “traditional” college students are categorized as full-time students. This generally means that your student is registered for a minimum of 12 credit hours per traditional semester and often means that you are charged a standard tuition fee rather than a per-credit fee.

As a general rule of thumb, you should expect to spend two hours studying or working outside of class for every one hour in lecture or discussion. A typical 4-unit course thus will require about 12 hours of work per week: 4 hours of classtime and 8 hours of work outside of class.

Typically, one unit, or one hour of class, will require two hours of study time. Consequently, a 3 unit course would require three hours of lectures, discussions, or labs and six hours of independent studying. A 3 unit course will, therefore, necessitate about nine hours of your time.

That said, science has indicated that learning is most effective between 10 am to 2 pm and from 4 pm to 10 pm, when the brain is in an acquisition mode. On the other hand, the least effective learning time is between 4 am and 7 am.

A student would be considered full-time if they studied 75% of a full-time load, or 3 units every 4 months. formally enrolled as a full-time student, AND. considered by their institution to be undertaking, on average, a full-time study-load over a term/semester.

Study load (Equivalent Full Time Student Load) is a measurement of how much a subject is worth in a normal full-time (120 credit point) year. To calculate a study load (EFTSL) for a single subject, divide the number of credit points for the subject by 120.

I personally recommend taking no more than 4 classes a semester (12 units). My advisors always recommended to me that if you want to graduate on time to take 15 units per semester or at least make sure to take 30 total each academic year.

It is fine if you are willing to spend most of your spare time reading textbook, doing assignments and visiting office hours. Well, if you do not care about grade, 5 courses per semester is not hectic at all. I’d say go with fewer courses if you can swing it with regards to financials and time.

-four classes is obviously already a lot of work, but generally it’s manageable if you manage your time. If 4 is too overwhelming and you can afford to do it, take 3.

three classes typically means 7–12 credits. That puts you at risk of not being considered full-time, and certainly puts you behind the normal pace for graduation. At many schools, only full-time students can live in the dorms or have other full-time privileges. Be sure that you don’t fall out of the status you need.

Full-time is generally a minimum of twelve credits or about four classes. Part-time is usually somewhere between six and eleven credits or two to three classes. Therefore, a full-time student spends more time in class during a semester than a part-time student.
