Part 2 of A Study in Scarlet is a complete departure from the first half of the story. An unnamed, limited third-person narrator has taken the place of Dr. John Watson. He introduces the reader to events that take place some 34 years prior to the murders of Enoch Drebber and Joseph Stangerson.

His first Sherlock Holmes story, “A Study in Scarlet,” was published in Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887. Starting in 1891, a series of Holmes stories appeared in The Strand magazine, and Conan Doyle was able to give up his medical practice and devote himself to writing.

In 1881, Watson is introduced by his friend Stamford to Sherlock Holmes, who is looking for someone to share rent at a flat in 221B Baker Street. Concluding that they are compatible, they subsequently move into the flat. In time, Holmes and Watson become close friends.
