The sword is easily one of the best close range weapons to use in Halo 2. The best tactic is to lay into an enemy player with your secondary weapon getting closer, then when within range perform a quick swipe with the sword for the finishing move.

It’s like a hot knife through butter. So yes, energy swords cut, and they can cut off limbs. We just don’t see that in the games because that’s not what Bungie or 343i was ever going for with the weapon. Modern day plasma cutters reach temperatures upwards of 20,000 degrees Celcius.

Due to the low-threat nature of these enemies they can easily be killed with any other weapon, or even a simple melee. The sword is extremely valuable against Elites, Brutes, Promethean Knights (except in Halo 5: Guardians), and perhaps Hunters and the Warden Eternal.
