Vern is killed in a house fire after a party. Teddy, while under the influence of alcohol, crashes his car and he and his passengers are killed.

Gordie says he didn’t hate Denny and he didn’t idolize him, but that “when Denny took me with him somewhere, it was of his own free will, and those were some of the happiest times I can remember” (357).

He died almost instantly. The narrator is then seen as a full-grown version of Gordie, who writes that even though he had not talked to Chris in ten years, “I will miss him forever”. Gordie then sees his son with some friends, whom he promised to take out.

Parents need to know that despite its high nostalgia factor and preteen stars, Stand by Me should by no means be considered a children’s movie.

Treasure Island

Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Treasure Island in 1881. It is set in the days of sailing ships and pirates and tells of the adventures of Jim Hawkins and his search for the buried treasure of an evil pirate, Captain Flint. The story begins at ‘The Admiral Benbow’, the inn that belongs to Jim Hawkin’s parents.

Treasure Island is a true Victorian era novel (1837-1901). First Published in 1883, the novel fits the criteria that make it a Victorian novel, thus making it a considered ‘classic’.

Treasure Island has been called a “novel of greed,” and certainly greed is a minor theme of the book. But the chief theme is Jim Hawkins’ quest to bring home something of great value and to gain his own moral adulthood, a treasure in itself.

At the end of the story, the captain and the other “good guys” leave all the mutineers who are still alive behind on the island. All, that is, except for Long John Silver, who comes with the good guys. They sail the Hispaniola to some unnamed city where Silver escapes.

Jim realizes that the contents he has snatched from the sea chest must be valuable, so he takes one of the documents he has found to some local acquaintances, Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney. Excited, they recognize it as a map for a huge treasure that the infamous pirate Captain Flint has buried on a distant island.

Not only does he provide Jim with the treasure map that inspires the trip to Treasure Island (over Billy Bones’s dead body), he is also the first character to sing, “Fifteen men on a dead man’s chest, yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!” He tells fearsome, exciting stories that both terrify and excite Jim – tales much like …

Treasure Island is a fantasy of crime involving men with ridiculous names and parrots on their shoulders who are searching for literal piles of gold. At the same time, while this isn’t a realistic portrayal of pirate life, Stevenson’s characterization does seem to reveal certain views about criminals.

When Silver escapes at the end of the novel, he takes “three or four hundred guineas” of the treasure with him, thus becoming one of only two former members of Captain Flint’s crew to get his hands on a portion of the recovered treasure.
