5-step process to develop a paragraph that illustrates a point

We learned the 8 different methods of developing a paragraph. The methods include: Facts and statistics, examples, and illustration, process, comparison and contrast, cause and effect, classification and analysis, definition, and analogy.

1. Decide on a controlling idea and create a topic sentence.
2. Elaborate on the controlling idea.
3. Give an example (or multiple examples)
4. Explain the example(s)
5. Complete the paragraph’s idea or transition into the next paragraph.

A paragraph is a series of sentences that are organized and coherent, and are all related to a single topic. Almost every piece of writing you do that is longer than a few sentences should be organized into paragraphs.

A sentence that makes a statement or assertion is called an assertive or declarative sentence. Assertive sentence ends with a period. Examples. He goes to school. He likes to play chess.

Assertive sentences can be divided into two categories called affirmative and negative.

Here are a few examples of assertive communication: “I completely understand what you’re saying but I have to disagree” “Could you explain the reasoning behind your decision, so I can try to understand what you’re doing” “I understand that you have a need to talk and I need to finish what I’m doing.

Assertive sentences are divided into two categories-

• Affirmative assertive sentence.
• Negative assertive sentence.

An assertive statement is one that clearly expresses your wants, needs, and/or thoughts while being respectful to the person you are communicating with.
