Critical reading is a more ACTIVE way of reading. It is a deeper and more complex engagement with a text. Critical reading is a process of analyzing, interpreting and, sometimes, evaluating. When we read critically, we use our critical thinking skills to QUESTION both the text and our own reading of it.
1) Understanding Close Reading Questions Always try to answer in your own words — you need to prove that you have understood the vocabulary. You do not have to write in sentences – for some you might be able to use bullet points (make sure the number of points you make matches the marks available).
Quote – Quote the word or phrase you are going to focus on.Analyse – Write down your analysis of the technique. Remember that a tone is ALWAYS created by a technique. Therefore in your analysis you should identify what technique has created the tone. Then go on to explain WHY the tone is created by this technique.

It is important that you know how to analyse a range of language features. Typically, the following language features crop up in National 5 RUAE papers: sentence structure (short/minor sentences, parenthesis, lists, punctuation etc.) imagery (metaphors, similes, personification) word choice.
Pick out /identify the most important words.Quote the words in your answer.Analyse the words in detail –the connotation, associations the word has, sound or tone etc.Discuss the effect of the word.Explain how the word helps you to understand the writer’s ideas/opinion.
Imagery is a feature of written and spoken language that occurs whenever someone has chosen to use language in a non-literal way. Imagery is a way of describing something symbolically, using words to create a picture in the reader’s imagination.
To answer an effective conclusion question you should take the following approach:“quote” any phrases that link back to ideas already mentioned earlier.Explain what it links back to and what was previously said.OR.“quote” an example of concluding language or a specific technique.Explain the effect that it creates.
