Punta is an Afro-indigenous dance and music originated by the Garifuna people of Saint Vincent (Antilles) with African and Arawak elements. Punta is the best-known cultural dance belonging to the Garifuna community. Punta is also known as banguity in Nicaragua.

The Dugu is an ancient extended funerary ceremony (in Guatemala , Belize , Honduras , Nicaragua it is also known as the 9 nights ceremony) practiced by the Garifuna people. The Dugu is a type of funeral ceremony that brings the community and families together.

The reasons for migration are numerous. Overpopulation, exhaustion of the small amount of land available to the small farmer, and local unrest, spur whole families to seek their livelihood or merely refuge outside their region or country’s borders.

Honduras identifies itself as a mestizo nation — of mixed indigenous and European roots — and officially only about 2 percent of the population is of African descent (though the actual number may be as high as 10 percent).

Garifuna Today There are currently over 600,000 Garifuna around the world. Central America has the highest population; 100,000 in Honduras and 8,000 in Nicaragua, which was one of the last settlements in 1912.

…the eastern region are the Garifuna (formerly called Black Caribs), who are descendants of the Carib people and Africans exiled from British colonies in the eastern Caribbean (Lesser Antilles) in the 18th century, and Creoles, English-speaking blacks mainly from Jamaica.

Garifuna music is an ethnic music and dance with African, Arawak, and Kalinago elements, originating with the Afro-Indigenous Garifuna people from Central America and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Like Bay Island Creoles they speak English and are Protestant, but unlike Creoles and Garifuna they were present in Honduras as temporary workers, vulnerable to the immigration policies of the Honduran state.

The Garífuna are the largest ethnic minority in Honduras. They are the descendants of African-Carib populations from the Caribbean island of St Vincent who were exiled to the Honduran coast in the eighteenth century.

The majority of the Honduran population is Mestizo (a mixture of Spaniards and Amerindian), these people are descended from immigrants from Spain and Amerindian people like the Lencas and Mayans. According to studies the Mestizo population makes up 40% of the total population of Honduras.

Hondurans are the eighth largest Hispanic group in the United States and the third largest Central American population, after Salvadorans and Guatemalans.
