Turn the ignition off and connect each end of the paperclip to the pins on the MES connector. Turn the ignition on, and the SRS light will come on for six seconds before turning off. Disconnect the paper clip as soon as the light goes off. When light comes back on reconnect the paperclip.

Step 1 – Reset the SRS light

1. Locate the Memory Erase Signal (MES) plug.
2. Disconnect the MES plug from its socket.
3. Strip each end of the speaker wires.
4. Hold the ends of both wires together, and turn on the ignition.
5. Hold the stripped ends of both wires together again.
6. Turn off the ignition to start your car as normal.

The main reason why it is unsafe to drive without an SRS airbag module installed is that a car’s airbags will not work without them. Without airbags deploying, a driver and any passengers can face severe injury or even death.

While you can certainly drive while your SRS light is on, it isn’t safe. You should get your vehicle to a service center as soon as possible so that a technician can inspect your SRS computer.

If the SRS light stays on or starts flashing on and off, you may have a problem with the airbags themselves, a loose wire, a faulty seat belt buckle, or a problem with the Engine Control Unit (ECU) that is causing the airbag warning light to stay on.

Turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect the battery negative cable and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning installation or replacement of the SRS unit, or disconnecting the connectors from the SRS unit. Do not spill water or oil on the SRS unit or the side impact sensors, and keep them away from dust.

You disconnect the battery before pulling the bag so an SRS fault isn’t stored. Airbag deployment doesn’t enter the picture at all. You could tap the front bumper against a pole or something at, say, 10-15 mph. That should get rid of the pesky airbag for you.

If the battery is disconnected the CAR can’t fire the airbag (unless there is some kind of capacitor in the system to allow such a thing) but YOU could set off the airbag with static electricity.

While the air bags in your car are designed to enhance safety during accidents, you do need to take a few precautions to ensure that you don’t damage the system, or increase your risk of injury. Never touch a deployed air bag or air bag equipment (they’re hot and you can burn yourself).

How to Reset an Airbag Light

1. Put the key into the ignition and turn the switch to the “on” position.
2. Watch for the airbag light to turn on. It will stay illuminated for seven seconds and then shut itself off. After it shuts off, immediately turn the switch off and wait three seconds.
3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 two more times.

Very often the light goes on because of a dying battery. But once the light is on, it will stay on even when you install a new battery, until you manually reset it.

Remove the terminal clamp and leave it disconnected for 5-10 seconds to allow the airbag sensor to reset. Then reconnect the battery terminal and turn the vehicle on. With a bit of luck, the light will stay off. If it comes back on then the best thing to do is to take your car in for a diagnostics scan.
