An important work task for interior designers and architects, Space Planning aims to make the best use of physical space. It involves – Process of organizing components of interior design such as furniture, wall partition and doors for space utilization.

Space planning is an in-depth analysis of how physical space is used in structures. It considers the purpose of spaces and who will use them. Space planning is a process that takes several steps, and it’s an important component for the work of interior designers and architects.

Space is one of the elements of design of architecture, as space is continuously studied for its usage. Architectural designs are created by carving space out of space, creating space out of space, and designing spaces by dividing this space using various tools, such as geometry, colours, and shapes.

Most architects today strive to create spaces that are more than just four walls and a ceiling. Since it is our human nature to explore our senses, it is one of the architect’s responsibilities to continuously look for new ways to stimulate the built environment both on the exterior and on the interior.

Space encompasses the volume of a structure, the parts of a building we move through and experience. Form is the mass, or grouping of materials, used to give a building its shape.

If you want to become a building architect or a designer, you will learn the four basic elements of architecture and design: Point, Line, Plane and Volume. With these four elements, you actually can create any architecture or design.

Space, based on its English lexical concepts, can be classified into three types of geographical space, living space and (interior or central) architectural space [4]. Bruno Zevi [6] considered space as the basis of architecture which architecture obtains its characteristics based on it.

There are two types of space:Posititve and Negative Positive Space is the area that an object takes up. Negative Space the the empty area around or in the holes of the object.

The Element of Design Space refers to the area within, around, above or below an object or objects. It is important to creating and understanding both two dimensional or three dimensional works of art.

What Does Space Do in Design? Space can be used to both separate and connect elements in a design. Wider spaces separate elements from each other and narrower spaces connect elements to reveal relationships between them. Overlapping elements maximizes their relationship.

Unity is the principle of design that unifies all other principles within a piece of work, allowing each individual element to coexist with one another to form an aesthetically pleasing design. A designer must leverage all of the principles of design in order to successfully achieve unity.

Space can be defined as positive or negative.

• Positive space is the filled space, the object(s) or element(s) in the design.

The organization of space is referred to as composition and is an essential component to any work of art. The space of an artwork includes the background, foreground, and middle ground , as well as the distance between, around, and within things.

For example, a metal sculpture may have a hole in the middle, which we would call the negative space. Henry Moore used such spaces in his freeform sculptures such as Recumbent Figure in 1938, and 1952’s Helmet Head and Shoulders. In two-dimensional art, negative space can have a great impact.

Space in a work of art refers to a feeling of depth or three dimensions. It can also refer to the artist’s use of the area within the picture plane. The area around the primary objects in a work of art is known as negative space, while the space occupied by the primary objects is known as positive space.

Positive space refers to the subject or areas of interest in an artwork, such as a person’s face or figure in a portrait, the objects in a still life painting, or the trees in a landscape painting.

Positive and negative space can form an important part of your overall composition. You can use positive and negative space to create a sense of balance and rhythm. Balance is one of the basic principles of design and refers to how well all the elements are balanced with each other.

Positive Space: The focus, or areas in a piece of art or design that are the direct subjects. It tends to be more active, dynamic, and motivating. For example, think of a still life painting of a bowl of fruit, or the trees in a landscape. Negative Space: The background, or areas around the direct subjects.

Choose to be positive, peaceful, and happy in your space by:

1. Using positive language, speech patterns, and affirmations.
2. Taking time for yourself.
3. Focusing as much as possible on the present.
4. Being optimistic about the future and having faith in people and situations.

Positive space is the one conceived as a void, then wrapped in a built shell erected to define and contain it. Negative space is created by hollowing out a solid that already exists.

Increased Comprehension: Proper use of whitespace makes everything visible and readable. Readers do not have to look for details as everything is organized and well-spaced. Many studies have proven that when there is proper spacing between paragraphs and images everything becomes more legible.

White space is the area between design elements. It is also the space within individual design elements, including the space between typography glyphs (readable characters). Despite its name, white space does not need to be white. It can be any color, texture, pattern, or even a background image.

Using white space evenly makes the content in design easily scannable and significantly improves legibility. A study conducted indicates that proper use of white space between lines of paragraphs and its left and right margins can increase comprehension up to 20%.

If you are seeing faces, then you are seeing the black areas as the positive space, and the white area as the negative space.
