PhotoMath promises to help solve simple linear equations and other math problems by “reading” questions with the help of your smartphone camera. But an answer isn’t all you’ll get from this free app. PhotoMath is now available for iOS and Windows mobile devices. An Android version will be available in 2015.

There are a couple of ways to check your math answer. The easiest way is to plug your solution back into the problem and work backwards to see if you get the right numbers that way. You can also take a look at your answer and see if it makes sense.

1. Redo every problem, on a separate piece of paper, without looking at the work that was already done (when they look at the work they already did, it influences them and they sometimes make the same mistake again).
2. Use the opposite operation to check, if possible.
3. Ask whether the answer is logical.

The process of making sure a solution is correct by making sure it satisfies any and all equations and/or inequalities in a problem. Example: Verify that x = 3 is a solution of the equation x2 – 5x + 6 = 0. To do this, substitute x = 3 into the equation.

General strategy for solving linear equations

1. Simplify each side of the equation as much as possible.
2. Collect all the variable terms to one side of the equation.
3. Collect all the constant terms to the other side of the equation.
4. Make the coefficient of the variable term to equal to 1.
5. Check the solution.

To determine whether an inequality is true or false for a given value of a variable, plug in the value for the variable. If an inequality is true for a given value, we say that it holds for that value. Example 1. Is 5x + 3≤9 true for x = 1 ?
