Not surprisingly, Christianity has extended its influence to many works of Western art. Artists use their artworks to express their own faith or to describe Biblical events and views on Christianity. Christianity strongly influenced the subject matter of early Medieval art, which very often depicts religious figures and scenes. It also determined artistic form, as we saw when we looked at illuminated manuscripts, liturgical vessels and High Cross sculptures.

As visible religion, art communicates religious beliefs, customs, and values through iconography and depictions of the human body. The foundational principle for the interconnections between art and religion is the reciprocity between image making and meaning making as creative correspondence of humanity with divinity.

As the Roman Empire expanded, art began to be influenced more and more by the East. Religion was a common source of inspiration for artistic content as the medieval period developed, and it was also a centre for the practice of art such as the illuminated manuscripts created in monasteries.

Romanesque art was influenced by both the Romans and Byzantine Art. Its focus was on religion and Christianity. It included architectural details like stained glass art, large murals on walls and domed ceilings, and carvings on buildings and columns. It also included illuminated manuscript art and sculpture.

Therefore, religion as a source of spiritual inspirations for creativity and human culture joins the humanity and divinity in the way of custom and myth.

Often, the Christian faith even determined the forms of early Medieval art. Illuminated manuscripts are a good example of that. They turned the Bible into exquisite works of art, and they are often covered with precious metals, jewels and carved ivory.

With religion still a prevalent theme, vibrant paintings featuring famous icons were also a recurring art form during the Middle Ages. Medieval art was prominent in European regions, the Middle East and North Africa, and some of the most precious examples of art from the Middle Ages can be found in churches, cathedrals, and other religious doctrines.
