Ever since the update to Android 9.0, Spotify Playback on my Samsung Galaxy S9+ has been an absolute mess. Whenever the smartphone screen turned off, the music stopped playing a few seconds after with neither bluetooth controls from a steering wheel, nor the lock screen controls working. Fortunately it turned out that the issue was not related to Spotify and that it is easily fixable by changing some settings in the OS.
