Welcome back to another episode of the MrExcel netcast. I’m Bill Jelen and today we have a question from one of our viewers regarding the size of the scrollbar in Excel. I’m not entirely sure if my solution is the best or most efficient, so I’m reaching out to all of you for your input. If you have any suggestions or tips, please don’t hesitate to email us at MrExcel.com.
The issue at hand is the scrollbar on the right-hand side of the spreadsheet. As you can see, when the window is minimized, the scrollbar takes up almost half of the window. It’s easy to scroll through the data in the spreadsheet, but the problem arises when we reach the last row of data. The scrollbar becomes incredibly small and it becomes a hassle to navigate through the spreadsheet. Even when we go back to the top of the spreadsheet, the scrollbar remains small. This can be frustrating, especially when dealing with large datasets.
My go-to solution for this problem is to determine the real last row of the spreadsheet. To do this, I use the END key on my keyboard followed by the HOME key. This takes me to the cell that Excel believes is the last cell in the spreadsheet. In this case, it shows that there are 18 rows of data, but for some reason, Excel thinks the spreadsheet goes all the way to row 701. To fix this, I simply delete the extra rows and columns that are not being used. Once I save the document, the scrollbar returns to its normal size.
Do you have any other tricks or methods for resizing the scrollbar after accidentally activating too many rows? If so, please share them with us and we’ll feature them in a future netcast. Thanks for tuning in and we’ll see you next time for more Excel tips and tricks from MrExcel.

If you navigate your worksheet rows by dragging your scrollbar slider, in some Excel worksheets, the scrollbar slider becomes incredibly small. In Episode 548, I show my one trick for solving this problem, but I expect that there are other solutions.
