Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Plot a Bell Curve with 2 Formulas in Excel.

Welcome to episode 2596 of MrExcel’s netcast, where we will be discussing how to plot a bell curve in Excel using just two formulas. This is an updated version of an old video, so make sure you have the formula =SEQUENCE working before trying this new method. If you encounter a #NAME? error, don’t worry, we have a solution for that as well.

To get started, add a cell for the mean and standard deviation at the top of your spreadsheet. Then, using the SEQUENCE function, create an array of 61 points. Why 61? Because it gives us a smooth line, unlike using fewer points which can result in jagged edges. The first formula will start at the mean minus three times the standard deviation and the step will be one standard deviation divided by 10.

Next, we will use the NORM.DIST function to get the points for the curve itself. Simply point to the array we created earlier and use the mean and standard deviation cells as the other arguments. No need to lock these cells with dollar signs as we will not be copying this formula. Once you have the range selected, insert a line chart and voila, you have your bell curve.

But wait, there’s more! This method is completely flexible, allowing you to change the mean and standard deviation to fit your needs. And if you want to add a vertical line at the mean, it’s as easy as adding a second series and using the high-low line chart element. And there you have it, a perfect bell curve in Excel with just two formulas.
