Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to Draw Custom Borders in Excel.

Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel netcast. In this episode, we will be diving into the world of border drawing in Excel. This may seem like a simple task, but with the new tools and features in Excel 2010, it has become even easier and more efficient. So let’s get started!

First, we have the Draw Borders tools, which can be found in the drop-down menu on the Home tab. However, I prefer to have these tools readily available, so I have added them to my Quick Access Toolbar. Now, let’s take a look at the five new tools that have been added. These tools were actually present in Excel 2003, but then disappeared in later versions. But now, they are back and better than ever.

When using the Draw Borders tools, we have the option to choose a Line Style and Line Color. As soon as we select one of these options, we are automatically put into Draw Border mode. This is indicated by the appearance of dots and a pencil. There are two modes within Draw Borders – Draw Border and Draw Border Grid. In Draw Border mode, we can simply click on the border to draw a single line. But in Draw Border Grid mode, we can draw a box around the entire range, making it easier to fill in the grid.

While the Borders drop-down menu has many options, I often find myself heading to the More Borders option to achieve the desired result. However, with these new tools, we can easily use the Erase, Draw Grid, or Draw Borders options to get the job done without having to go to the Format Cells dialog box. This is a great time-saving feature that I’m sure you will appreciate.
