Nevertheless, freedom of the press in the United States is subject to certain restrictions, such as defamation law, a lack of protection for whistleblowers, barriers to information access and constraints caused by public and government hostility to journalists.

In short, freedom of the press is important for the smooth functioning of democracy. It is important for people to be socially aware of happenings in the world. One must have the power to criticize the government; it will keep the administration on their toes to do better for the country.

Through social media networks, they can create new friendships, express their views and opinions, and even create ‘new identities’. Social media also exposes students to a whole new way of learning. Research has shown that students who are frequent users of social media are more innovative and exhibit better memory.

• Sleep problems. Media use can interfere with sleep.

• Negative effect on school performance.

However, multiple studies have found a strong link between heavy social media and an increased risk for depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts. Social media may promote negative experiences such as: Inadequacy about your life or appearance.

Apparently, fame on social media has a considerable influence on how a person perceives their status in real life as well. Public perception, in turn, influences self perception of a person and raises a person’s social status in the eyes of others, and in the eyes of that person as well.

There is no definitive answer to whether mass media is “good” or “bad”. Research has shown that it can have both positive and negative effects, and often these effects are dependent on how the media is being used and consumed.

Some of the benefits of social media are: Having a platform to showcase technological savvy and creativity. Increased self-confidence by empowering introverts to express their ideas. The ability to create lifelong friends.

This influence can be negative or positive. The negative effects of mass media on society can lead people towards poverty, crime, nudity, violence, bad mental and physical health disorders and others as such severe outcomes.
