DirectStorage 1.1 now supports GPU based asset decompression. Today, we take a look at how DirectStorage performs on several different configurations. First we use an NVMe Gen3 drive with GPU decompression enabled. Then we turn off GPU decompression. We then switch to an HDD to see how DirectStorage performs with GPU decompression. Finally, we test DS with CPU decompression on an HDD.

As you can see, the bandwidth in all cases far exceeds the capabilities of the storage devices in question. On an NVMe Gen3 drive that only supports up to 3.5 GB/s, the bandwidth with GPU decompression enabled exceeds 8 GB/s!

The demo is being run on Windows 11, which has some improvements to the storage stack over Windows 10, such as I/O Rings and BypassIO.

The latest NVIDIA GeForce driver is also being used, which supports RTX IO.
