Politician Roy Jenkins said that Sir Winston had what he called “near idolatry” for Elizabeth and great respect for the monarchy. According to the Daily Mirror, the Queen reportedly wrote Sir Winston a heartbreaking, handwritten letter after he retired in 1955, saying how much she would miss him.

It’s unlikely that Churchill ever kissed Her Majesty on the forehead before he left his last audience.

She was well received by the Queen, the Queen Mother and the Duke of Edinburgh. Charles subsequently courted Diana in London. He proposed on 6 February 1981 at Windsor Castle, and she accepted, but their engagement was kept secret for two and a half weeks.

One detail that has thrown many fans off was Winston Churchill’s (John Lithgow) assistant Venetia Scott, who shockingly died during the Great Smog of 1952 that took centre stage in episode four. The young blonde Scott (Kate Phillips) begins working for Churchill as he embarks on his second term as Prime Minister.

Was Venetia Scott real? The lovestruck secretary is one of the few characters not based on a real person. She was invented by the show’s creator Peter Morgan to add a sense of tragedy to the Great Smog of December 1952.

His funeral was then held at St. Paul’s Cathedral, where the Queen broke protocol to convey her reverence for the late prime minister. Following the funeral, Churchill’s coffin was loaded onto a boat that floated along the River Thames to a family plot near his birthplace at Blenheim Palace.
