Futureproofing Tips

CPU future-proofing is a complex topic, and while many debate whether to choose the 9800X3D or the 285K, our team believes it’s best to consider the socket first.

Ideally, you’d want a socket that will remain relevant for several years, allowing you to upgrade your CPU while keeping the same RAM and motherboard. This significantly reduces upgrade costs in the long run.

For example, AMD’s AM4 socket was launched back in 2017 and is still highly relevant today. In fact, I’m currently using an AM4 setup with a 5700X3D, and it’s unlikely to bottleneck even the most powerful GPUs when gaming in 4K.

However, if you’re looking to future-proof your system, AM5 is the better choice since the 5700X3D marks the end of the AM4 lineup—AMD will not be producing any new AM4 CPUs. In contrast, AM5 will be supported until at least 2026.

On the Intel side, the LGA1851 socket was introduced in October 2024, but its long-term viability remains uncertain.

As a gamer, I personally prefer AMD and will likely skip AM5 altogether.
