In today’s video we will be demonstrating how to enable the Google Assistant by voice on Chromebook.
This is helpful if you’ve just purchased a ChromeOS device and Google Assistant isn’t working by voice.
The reason for this may be your Google Assistant is set to On (Recommended) by default.
On (Recommended) means your Google Assistant will only work by voice when your device is plugged in or charging.
This is fine for a Chromebase like the HP 21.5” Rotatable but not so great for a Chromebook on battery.
This means we must change the setting for Google Assistant to be “Always On.”

For reference, I’m using the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5, a most glorious large screen tablet with detachable keyboard.
