The tire is held to the rim by an area called the bead. The sidewall in between the bead and tread surface is relatively weak on steel belted radial tires. You can cut though it with a the drywall knife pictured. You will however need a saw blade or cutoff wheel for the bead wires.

Lift the tire over the top lip of the rim with a screwdriver and pry bar. Start on 1 side of the tire. Push down on the rubber so it is beneath the edge of the rim. Slide the pry bar underneath the rubber, then lift it until the bead is above the rim.

How to Remove a Tire From the Rim With Hand Tools

1. Lay the tire down on the ground with the outer rim side facing up and remove the valve stem cap.
2. Push the tip of the valve stem removal tool into the valve stem and turn counter-clockwise.
3. Wedge a large flat tip screwdriver between the rim and the tire to break the seal on the wheel.

Expect to pay: $13 to $45 dollars per tire industry-wide, depending on the size of the tire. Mounting (installing tires on to the rims) and balancing (adding weights to make sure the wheel weighs the same all around) varies widely for cars, SUVs, and light trucks, and is highly dependent on the size of the tire.

Contact local junkyards or junk dealers and ask what they will pay for tire rims. A junk dealer is the go-between you and a recycling center. A junk dealer will often buy your rims in order to sell them for scrap metal.

Removing the Sidewall. Puncture the sidewall close to the tread with a sharp knife. A utility knife or retractable box cutter will do the best job of slicing through the thick tire rubber. Thrust the tip of the blade straight into the smooth surface of the rubber about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from where the tread begins.

A broken bead can occur when a tire is mounted on an improper rim or carelessly mounted or dis- mounted. Bead chafing can occur when mounting a tire on a dirty or mismatched rim, or when the tire is in an overloaded or under-inflated condition.

Deflate the tire fully, squeezing to remove any pressure on the bead. Assume there is tire sealant inside & keep the valve away from the downward position. Push both sides of the tire toward the center of the rim to loosen the bead from against the rim sidewall.

Putting a tube in tubeless tires The procedure for tubing tubeless tires is the same as for regular tires. With the tubeless valve removed, you can place a tube in the rim in much the same way as a regular tire. You will most likely have more difficulty getting the tire bead back over the rim.

If there is still a lot of sealant left in the tires, it’s a good idea to remove it with an injector like the handy one from KOM Cycling, before removing the tire completely. Once the tire is off, wipe it out thoroughly with a rag or paper towels, along with a bike-friendly cleaner.

Most tubeless sealant manufacturers suggest a range of 30-60ml (1-2 ounces) per wheel for average sized road tires (say, 23-32mm). If you’re like me, you err towards the higher end of this range, because you don’t like flat tires or adding sealant more frequently than you have to.

Lubricating the bead may allow the tire to move around enough to seal, but using the wrong lube can make the tire more likely to spin on the wheel. The lube should be something like soapy water or RuGlyde, not oil, grease, silicone, or anything that remains slippery.

One of the best ones consists of 1 part tubeless slime, 2 parts water, 2 parts windshield washer, 2-4 parts latex, plus silicone until the desired consistency. It may seem a bit watery at first, but it sticks well. The color will be a shade of greenish-brown. Add some glitter or rubber dust for thickener.

Both are vital in the proper mounting and/or repair of tires. Always use them only as intended to ensure the best repair techniques. Bead Sealer is a rubber product that is formulated to aid with the seating of the tire to the rim in applications where the rim may be pitted or rusty such as in a farm tire application.

A leak in the bead seal occurs when water infiltrates the wheel and sits where the tyre and the rim meet. This area is called the bead seal area, and the metal slowly corrodes as the leak is created. Bead seal leaks are most prominent in alloy or aluminium rims. Remove the wheel from the car.

Slime Tire Sealant will seal punctures up to ¼” (6mm). The puncture must occur in the tread area of the tire since Slime cannot reach or seal punctures outside of the tread area. Slime will not seal bead leaks or large punctures. Slime is intended to be used as a temporary emergency repair in passenger vehicles.
