Here is one DOS prompt that will save your butt and make sure your deleted files are gone for good.
Do you know that when you delete a file from your computer, it’s not really deleted? The deleted file can be easily found and recovered by anyone who wants to take a look.
This command will overwrite all the deleted files and free space on a given drive with random data. Should a system admin or a bad actor want to recover your deleted files, they won’t be able to.
You’ll need to know the drive letter of the drive you want to protect.
To find a drive letter, open Windows File Explorer.
Click THIS PC
A list of available drives will appear showing the drive letters. I’m going to protect my H drive. You can protect whichever drive you want.
Let’s get started by opening a DOS command prompt.
From the Windows start or search bar, type RUN
In the run box, type CMD
From the command prompt type the following
cipher /w:H:
Of course, substitute H for whichever drive letter you wish to protect.
Press Enter, grab a cup of coffee and sit back and wait. This will take awhile.
It took my computer 1 hour and 30 minutes to overwrite the free space.
