Dam is the new-fangled word for bitch, as in, an intact (not spayed) female of the canine species. In scientific articles since 2005, the accepted term for an intact female canine (particularly when you refer to reproductive processes) has become, dam.

The dog will tend to emerge the winner in this fight, the fox is not as large as the dog. They will tend to avoid any challenge from the dog by running hiding. Foxes most likely will attack smaller animals such as cats but not as large as the dogs.

When Do Baby Foxes Leave Their Mother By the time the cubs are six months old, they’re very difficult to tell apart from the adults. After one full year, they are no longer considered infants, and these baby foxes can leave their mother and begin a life of their very own.

Yell, clap your hands, wave your arms, stomp your feet—make your presence felt, but do not approach or chase the animal. You can also carry a whistle, or other noisemaker when walking in known coyote or fox areas.

Ignore it, or take the opportunity to watch back. If a fox enters your yard and you feel uncomfortable about it, just yell, stamp your feet, wave your arms, or spray it with water — it’ll leave the scene. If it appears ill, stay far away from it and contact Animal Control.

Dogs and Kids Are Targets Because kids and dogs are small and look like easier prey, you need to take some extra steps. The first is that a dog has more awareness than people and will alert you if a mountain lion is near, and might even scare the mountain lion off.

If You Encounter a Bear

1. When you see a bear but the bear doesn’t see you, detour quickly and quietly, but do not run.
2. Pick up your dog (if it’s small enough) so he does not run, or keep your larger dog close to you.
3. If the bear sees you, remain still, stand your ground, and avoid sudden movements.

Here are things to do if you encounter a coyote:

1. If you’re walking a smaller dog, pick it up.
2. Make yourself appear the bigger threat.
3. Do not run or turn your back.
4. Continue to “haze” the coyote until it leaves the area; then you should go, too.
5. The suggestion to haze the coyote changes in February through July.

Coyotes have a strong sense of smell, which they use to find food sources and hunt in packs. You can take advantage of this by repelling them with smells they dislike, such as wolf urine, white vinegar, strong perfumes, and cayenne/chili pepper.

Coyote Protection on Walks The coyote vest mentioned above is great for your dog to wear on a walk if you’re in an area where you might encounter one. Keeping your dog on leash is also safer, since most coyotes are wary of people and won’t attack your dog if he’s close to you.

So please do not feed or befriend a coyote! Give them the cold shoulder by practicing complete avoidance. Always walk away from a coyote so as not to crowd it or to invite friendship. Wild animals may be unpredictable, but also we want our urban coyotes to remain wild by giving them the space they need.

Coyotes are social animals, much like dogs. It is possible for humans to take them in as family. Unlike dogs, however, they have many wild instincts that may clash with our expectations of correct behavior inside a home.

Coyote attacks on humans are uncommon and rarely cause serious injuries, but have been increasing in frequency, especially in the state of California.

These include:

2. Whistle or small air horn (you can purchase small air horn “necklaces”)
3. Squirt guns.
4. Pepper spray.
5. Sticks or other objects to throw towards (but not at) the coyote.

If you see a coyote during the daytime, you should exhibit caution, as that coyote may have become habituated to humans (and may be more likely to attack). If you are approached by a coyote, you should yell, wave your arms, and/or throw something at the coyote (do not run away).

When are coyotes most active? Coyotes are not strictly nocturnal. They may be observed during the day, but are generally more active after sunset and at night. You may see and hear coyotes more during mating season (January – March) and when the young are dispersing from family groups (October – January).

Coyote attacks on people are very rare. Less often, people are bitten by cornered coyotes, or even more rarely, rabid coyotes. There have only been two recorded incidences in the United States and Canada of humans being killed by coyotes.

The Kelly Keen coyote attack is the only known fatal coyote attack on a child, as well as the only known fatal coyote attack on a human ever confirmed in the United States.
