Bethany Hamilton and Alana Blanchard have been friends for a long, long time. Over the years, that friendship grew stronger. Fast forward to today, and both women are staples in the surf world.

AnnaSophia Robb wore a green sleeve on her left arm while filming scenes that occur after the shark attack depicted in the movie. Her arm was digitally removed in post production. AnnaSophia Robb and Dennis Quaid had to learn to surf for the movie, but Helen Hunt was already an amateur surfer.

Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer who came to prominence after surviving a shark attack in 2003, during which she lost her left arm. The shark severed the limb just below the shoulder which meant she could not wear weight-bearing prosthetics, so Hamilton taught herself to surf with just one arm.

Did they ever find the exact shark that bit Bethany’s arm? Yes. At the time, a family of fisherman led by Ralph Young caught and killed a tiger shark about one mile from the site of the attack.

Bethany Hamilton announced that she will compete on the 2020 World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series. The 30-year-old surfer wants to qualify for the WSL Women’s Championship Tour in 2021. Hamilton, who lost her left arm in 2003 in a shark attack incident in Kauai, is back competing on a full-time schedule.

While they were out surfing, a tiger shark attacked Hamilton and bite her left arm, severing it. After it happened, Hamilton’s best friend and her family helped paddle her back to shore. She was rushed to the hospital, and when she arrived, she had lost over 60 percent of blood and was in hypovolemic shock.

Bethany Hamilton is a hero, not only because she survived a severe shark attack losing her left arm, but because she has bravery strength and determination to overcome the challenge. On February 1990, Bethany Hamilton’s parents taught her now to surf.

On October 31, she is bitten by a shark and her left arm is traumatically amputated to her shoulder. Only 26 days after losing her arm, Bethany returns to surfing with only one arm, receiving international media recognition.

Was Bethany’s father, Tom Hamilton, already at the hospital for knee surgery? Yes. According to Bethany Hamilton’s Soul Surfer book, her father was at Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Lihue for surgery that morning. His legs had already been anesthetized and he was in the operating room waiting to begin.

Bethany is good in the heart and has an unbelievable amount of strength and courage. Her friends and family have never heard of surfing with one arm but Bethany has shown everyone that it is possible. Bethany Hamilton is my hero because she has shown me to turn negatives into positives.
