Windows has the ability to index your files into a database type system so when you search for files and folders and even Outlook emails, the process will be faster. But the hardware you have installed in your computer will determine whether having indexing enabled will speed things up for you or slow things down. For example, if you have a solid state (SSD) hard drive then leaving indexing turned off is probably your best bet but if you have a slow processor and a spinning IDE or SATA drive then you might want to leave it enabled.
